Your social media has goals, and one of those goals is to be shareable.
And one way to be shareable is to be funny. We love funny here at YYA.

What is funny content?

Asking what defines “funny” might seem like an unnecessary question, but it’s trickier than you think. Funny is subjective.

In case your brain is not picking up what we’re putting down, just remember what Carrie Fisher said in When Harry Met Sally,

“Everybody thinks they have good taste and a sense of humor but they couldn’t possibly all have good taste.”… or a good sense of humor.

I mean, we think you have a fantastic sense of humor. We’re not talking about *you.* We also think you have great taste.

But if you should, despite your good taste and humor, still want to know more about being funny on social media, then please do read on…

The YEAH YEAH Agency’s best, not-all-that-funny advice about being funny:

  • The most important thing you need to know when using humor in social media? It’s your audience. Is your audience edgy, sarcastic, silly, conservative, older, and younger G-rated young? The biggest risk in using humor in your social media is not knowing your demographic and pushing it too far.
  • Clever is easier than funny. Don’t underestimate good wit. Universally funny is hard to pull off, but your pun might just be more charming than you think, Dad.
  • When in doubt, leave it out. Trust your gut. That’s all we have to say about that.
  • Most businesses – even the most serious – can use humor on social media. The element of surprise is a key element of successful humor. We have serious clients doing serious work who will occasionally share a funny meme, joke, quote, or story. Surprise your audience with something funny and you’re more likely to keep them close.
